Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) announced that the United States Postal Service (USPS) began centralized mail delivery service in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina, on November 2. This breakthrough follows years of advocacy by Congresswoman Ross with support from Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Ted Budd (R-NC), Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) and the RTP business community.
The Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina and USPS leaders successfully worked together to implement changes necessary to establish centralized mail delivery for the first time since RTP was established 65 years ago. Home to more than 375 companies and 55,000 employees across 7,000 acres, RTP previously relied on a single U.S. Post Office that did not adequately serve this growing area.
“Centralized mail delivery service is a crucial milestone for Research Triangle Park, a hub of innovation and progress that continues to propel our state and country to new heights,” said Congresswoman Ross. “Ensuring RTP has the support it needs is essential for the growth and success of hundreds of companies. It’s unacceptable that businesses in RTP were forced to function without centralized mail delivery. After years of work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I'm grateful that we have finally implemented centralized mail delivery in RTP. Thank you to our partners at the Research Triangle Foundation and USPS for their cooperation and commitment to resolving this issue.”
“I’m pleased that the United States Postal Service has officially dispatched mail delivery services within Research Triangle Park, addressing a longstanding and urgent need in this rapidly growing region,” said Congresswoman Foushee. “This vital infrastructure improvement will deliver the reliable postal services businesses and residents in RTP need to succeed and thrive. I am grateful for the ongoing collaboration between congressional offices, USPS officials, and RTP foundation representatives, which has made this essential service possible for our constituents and will support RTP’s continued growth for years to come.”
“We are grateful to our Congressional delegation, USPS and RTP companies for coalescing as a team to get this done. Collaborative problem-solving is a regional differentiator for the Triangle," said Scott Levitan, President and CEO of the Research Triangle Foundation. "Direct mail delivery marks an important step forward in enhancing operational efficiency and supporting the growth of the hundreds of companies based here in RTP. Reliable mail service is essential as we build out Hub RTP, our mixed-use downtown development, to welcome new residents and meet the evolving needs of our businesses.”
Over the past year, Research Triangle Foundation Vice President of Planning and Public Policy Travis Crayton and his team have worked closely with USPS officials to prepare for phased mail delivery service in RTP. On November 2, 2024, USPS confirmed the start of street delivery to select addresses within RTP. Delivery routes will continue to expand as additional RTP companies and organizations opt for street address mail service.
Congresswoman Ross began working to bring mail delivery to RTP more than two years ago. In August 2022, Congresswoman Ross and former Congressman David Price initially requested that USPS expand services and establish mail delivery for the RTP campus. Following a lack of action by USPS to address the issue adequately, the members then joined the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform in demanding action.
In September 2023, Congresswoman Ross led Senator Thom Tillis, Senator Ted Budd, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee, and 110 RTP businesses in a letter urging USPS to implement centralized mail delivery service to the entire RTP campus.
In November 2023, USPS responded to that letter, announcing that USPS leaders and the Research Triangle Foundation had begun working together to implement the necessary changes to begin the process to institute centralized mail delivery.
