Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) voted against House Republicans’ budget resolution that would authorize steep cuts in funding for Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Head Start, school lunch programs, and more to pay for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for ultra wealthy Americans. Under this plan, North Carolina’s Second District stands to lose $1.14 billion in funding for Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

“From the mountains to the coast, millions of North Carolinians rely on essential federal funding for healthcare, food assistance, education, and more,” said Congresswoman Ross. “Congressional Republicans’ so-called ‘plan’ to reduce costs is actually a heartless scheme that would rip away healthcare from seniors, new moms, and children to pay for tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk. They are putting lives in jeopardy in their quest to cut funding and appease their rich donors. Every day and in every way, House Democrats will stand up for the American people. We are absolutely united in our opposition to any plan that jeopardizes the lives and livelihoods of the people we were elected to serve.”

House Republican’s budget resolution is detrimental for North Carolina by paving the way for the following results:

  • Gutting funding for the Affordable Care Act, which would increase the average premium by $660 per year for 66,000 people in NC-02
  • Putting 109,994 people in NC-02 at risk of losing their Medicaid coverage, including more than 59,00 children
  • Threatening food assistance for the 48,000 people in NC-02 who count on SNAP to put food on the table
  • Cutting at least $330 billion nationwide for student loan programs, Pell Grants, Head Start and school lunch programs
