Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) voted to pass H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act. This bill provides a pathway to citizenship for 3.4 million Dreamers, TPS Holders, DED beneficiaries, and children of long-term work visa holders who have been essential members of our communities, contributed to our economy, and strengthened our nation.

“This legislation will keep families together and ensure that our nation remains a leader in innovation,” said Congresswoman Ross. “I am particularly thrilled that a new provision in this bill aims to protect the children of long-term visa holders. Many young adults in my district were brought to the United States as dependents of long-term visa holders. Under current law, they risk having to self-deport when they reach age 21 and their dependent visas expire. This updated American Dream and Promise Act extends permanent residency to these Documented Dreamers.”

The American Dream and Promise Act establishes a process to grant conditional or full lawful permanent resident (LPR) status to eligible Dreamers. After five years, they can apply for citizenship. Many of these individuals came to the United States as children—our country is the only home they’ve ever known.

The legislation also creates a path for eligible individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to obtain full LPR status and the opportunity to apply for citizenship five years later.

H.R. 6 has the support of nearly 75% of the American public and represents a momentous step forward in providing vital protections for all Americans. Earlier this week, Congresswoman Ross spoke on the legislation in the House Rules Committee. A clip of her remarks can be found here.
