Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) and Congressman Mike Carey (OH-15) led 52 colleagues in a bipartisan letter urging President Biden to designate October 1, 2024 – or another appropriate day – as National Science Day in the United States. October 1st was selected because NASA was founded on that date in 1958. Congresswoman Ross is a Member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee and represents much of the Research Triangle Park, a nationally renowned science and innovation hub that supports over 350 companies and 60,000 employees.

Congresswoman Ross previously led a letter with Congressman Carey and introduced a resolution to officially designate a National Science Day.

“On October 1st, the United States will celebrate the establishment of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958,” the lawmakers wrote. “American investments in science and technology have had a profound impact on national progress, economic growth, and societal well-being. Yet despite centuries of American scientific achievement and reliance on scientific research, the United States does not officially recognize a National Science Day.

“In order to properly recognize and celebrate American scientific achievement and inspire the next generation to continue this honorable and vital tradition, we urge you to issue a proclamation designating October 1, 2024 or an appropriate day as National Science Day in the United States,” the lawmakers continued.
