Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“Five years ago, President Trump incited a violent mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol and attempted to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. Today, we remember the fragility of our democracy and just how close we came to losing it. I join patriotic Americans from both parties in mourning the lives we lost on that awful day, especially the courageous Capitol Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the lives of my colleagues and our democratic system.

“Unfortunately, five years later, President Trump and his Republican enablers continue to rewrite history and deny the truth of what occurred on January 6, 2021. In one of the very first acts of his second term, Trump pardoned hundreds of violent January 6th rioters. Since then, he has persisted in shamelessly peddling lies about the central role he played in the insurrection. Moreover, despite being required to do so by law, Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to unveil an official plaque honoring the officers who bravely defended the Capitol on January 6th.

“As leaders and lawmakers, we must never be afraid to tell the truth about the events of that terrible day. We must never be reticent about condemning those who seek to undermine our democratic institutions for political gain. And we must not only commemorate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, but pledge to continue fighting for our sacred democracy every single day.”
