Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Trump and his administration to cut nearly $800 million in grants for the National Institutes of Health (NIH):
“The Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump administration to slash nearly $800 million in critical NIH grant funding on procedural grounds is devastating for our nation’s public health and scientific research. This ruling halts crucial research on diseases and health disparities that disproportionately affect underserved communities. Ground-breaking work on conditions ranging from breast cancer and Alzheimer’s to HIV, suicide prevention, and environmental health initiatives are now at risk.”
“‘Short-sighted' doesn’t begin to describe the recklessness of this decision. In the Triangle, these cuts will directly threaten research at our world-class universities, slow the progress of life sciences companies that depend on NIH partnerships, and disrupt clinical trials that patients and families are counting on for breakthrough treatments.
“I will continue fighting for the full restoration of these NIH funds, and I call on my Republican colleagues to do the same and join me in standing up for patients and scientists. The American people are counting on Congress to do our job and preserve funding for lifesaving research.”
