Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) voted against the Republican budget resolution, which authorizes $880 billion in Medicaid cuts, $230 billion in cuts to food assistance, and $7 trillion in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy. It also will increase the deficit at the expense of the next generation.
This plan will terminate Medicaid expansion in North Carolina, potentially resulting in the loss of coverage for more than 109,000 people in the Second District. In addition, the GOP budgetary blueprint threatens the benefits of 48,000 Second District residents who rely on SNAP as well as the more than 408,000 children who rely on free school lunches.
“Today, I voted for the second time against a dangerous Republican scheme to slash funding for healthcare, food assistance, education, and more,” said Congresswoman Ross. “No matter how hard they try to spin their reckless plan, the facts remain – Republicans are attempting to rip away healthcare and other vital assistance from seniors, new moms, and children to pay for tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk.
“Their plan will not only hurt economic growth, it will also cause real and lasting harm to the people of North Carolina, not least by triggering the elimination of Medicaid expansion in our state. If that happens, more than 600,000 North Carolinians will immediately lose access to care and rural hospitals may be forced to close their doors forever. It’s time for responsible Republicans to stand up to this madness and join Democrats in fighting these dangerous attacks on life-saving services and resources.”
