The legacy of the late Millie Dunn Veasey was cemented in stone, with the post office located at 2777 Brentwood Road in Raleigh renamed the “Millie Dunn Veasey Post Office.”
On Tuesday, Congresswoman Deborah Ross announced that her legislation to rename the post office after Veasey was signed into law by President Biden.
Veasey was a graduate of both Saint Augustine’s University and North Carolina Central University. She was most known for serving in the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion during World War II.
This battalion was the only all-Black, all-female unit to operate overseas. They were recently highlighted in the new Netflix movie “The Six Triple Eight.”
Veasey passed away at the age of 100 in 2018. She is buried at the Raleigh VA National Cemetery.
