Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on President Trump’s harmful actions taken on his first day in office, including pardons for violent January 6th insurrectionists, unconstitutional limits on birthright citizenship, orders to halt offshore wind energy permitting, and more.
“On his first day in office, President Trump took a series of actions that embody the same hatred, vitriol, and complete disregard for the needs of the American people that have defined his entire political career. These Executive Orders will inflict real and lasting harm on our country.
“In his first official acts as president, Trump has undermined our democracy and threatened core American values – by pardoning individuals who fought violently to overturn an election and by unconstitutionally limiting birthright citizenship. Thousands of hardworking immigrants call North Carolina home and have made our state culturally and economically stronger. This Executive Order contradicts the plain meaning of the Constitution and is horrifying in its effects and overreach. It will be strenuously fought in the courts and deserves to be immediately struck down.
“Further, although President Trump promised to boost our economy and lower costs, his order to halt offshore wind energy permitting will have serious consequences for North Carolina’s economy. Our state is leading America’s development of offshore wind energy, which has not only supported our fight for a clean energy future but also bolstered North Carolina’s economy and created thousands of jobs.
“Any hope that President Trump would focus on the real issues that he promised to address during his campaign – namely lowering costs – has already been lost. He will continue to operate as he always has – attacking our freedoms, our democracy, our economy, and our environment.
“I’m ready to fight back. Democrats will work with anyone willing to put our people, constitution, and country ahead of the whims of President Trump.”
