Following a push from Ross, the VA began maintenance to address flooding at the cemetery
Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) visited the Raleigh National Cemetery to view important improvements being made to address flooding and drainage issues at the historic cemetery. In March 2021 following reports from constituents that the cemetery experiences substantial flooding in Section 25 after heavy rainfall, Congresswoman Ross urged the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to address these issues, which have affected the graves of dozens of soldiers who fought in World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. In her office’s most recent correspondence with the VA, the department confirmed that a contractor is onsite at the cemetery and has begun excavating the road to install piping. The VA estimates that repairs will be complete before the end of 2023.
“Our service members and veterans put their lives on the line to defend our country,” said Congresswoman Ross. “It is unacceptable that we would allow their graves – a solemn tribute to their service and sacrifice – to be destroyed due to improper maintenance. I was grateful to see the improvements in person and remain confident that the VA is committed to addressing these lingering issues. I will continue pressing the VA for updates and to complete this project in a timely manner.”
