Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to grant an emergency stay in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a decision that prevents the abrupt and unnecessary reversal of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decades-old approval of mifepristone. The FDA approved mifepristone in 2000, and since then, 5 million women have used it to safely end their pregnancies and treat miscarriages. It is used in more than half of abortions nationwide and experts say it is safer than Tylenol and Viagra when it comes to serious medical complications.

“I am relieved that — at least for now — the Supreme Court has prevented a lower federal court’s ban on mifepristone from going into effect. Medication abortion is safe, effective, and relied on by millions of women for necessary abortion and miscarriage care. But this fight is far from over.

“This case should never have reached our nation’s highest court and is the direct result of a decades-long war waged by Republicans to control women and our bodies. An extremist judge in Texas rejected science when he banned a safe medication that women have relied on for two decades. In addition, this case clearly sets a dangerous precedent for court interference into other FDA-approved drugs.

“While we wait to see how the legal process will play out, I remain committed to working with my Democratic colleagues to combat this all-out assault on our freedom and our health care.”

Congresswoman Ross joined more than 250 of her Democratic colleagues in calling on the Supreme Court to uphold the FDA’s approval of mifepristone.
