Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to review a lower court’s decision that would restrict access to mifepristone. In 2022, it was estimated that abortion pills account for half of all abortions in the U.S.

“I am grateful that the Supreme Court has heeded the calls of the Biden administration and decided to review a lower court’s disastrous decision to restrict access to mifepristone – a safe, effective medication that has been widely prescribed by doctors and used by women for abortion and miscarriage care. While access to mifepristone will continue as the court reviews this case, women should not have to continue facing threats to their reproductive health care, and the courts should not be the arbiter of access.

“Women in North Carolina and across the country should be free to make their own decisions about their own bodies. Restricting access to safe medication would be a grave mistake that would put millions of women in jeopardy and prevent doctors from doing their jobs. It is imperative that the Supreme Court use this opportunity to protect women’s fundamental rights and finally put an end to the irresponsible, misinformed debates surrounding this life-saving medication.”
