Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement after Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) announced that he will not file for re-election:
“For the past year, it has been an honor to work alongside Congressman Nickel to deliver results for the people of Wake County. From his pragmatic leadership on the House Financial Services Committee to his tireless efforts to forge bipartisan compromise on a range of important issues, Wiley’s tenure in Congress has made a lasting impact on our state and our community.
“I am grateful for his friendship and partnership, and I look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of the people of Wake County for the remainder of this term and wherever his career takes him next. Wiley’s departure represents a significant loss for the North Carolina congressional delegation because he embodies exactly the kind of leadership that America desperately needs at this difficult moment — thoughtful, forward-looking, compromise-seeking leadership that puts our country’s needs first.
“During the 2022 election, Wiley won one of the most competitive elections in the nation. It is shameful that North Carolina Republicans eliminated this purple seat in their extreme, partisan gerrymander. Their egregious congressional map intentionally fails to reflect the ideological and racial diversity of our great state, silencing the voices of voters across North Carolina.”
