Washington, D.C.— Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on President Biden's historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court:

“Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is an exceptional choice to serve on our nation’s highest court, and I applaud this historic nomination by President Biden. Her qualifications speak for themselves, as she has served for decades in our justice system in every role from federal public defender, to law clerk for Justice Stephen Breyer, to federal judge. At a time when so many pivotal cases hang in the balance, her experience and background will serve our nation well as we strive for a system that delivers justice, fairness, and equality for every American.

“When Justice Breyer announced his retirement, I said that we needed to appoint an individual to the Supreme Court who could meet the high standards he brought to the bench during his nearly 30 years of service. President Biden has made a choice that will not only live up to this standard, but will also solidify Justice Breyer’s legacy as a man who created space to elevate those who have been underrepresented in our judicial system for too long. Judge Jackson is the first Black nominee to the Supreme Court in more than three decades and would be the first Black woman to serve on the Court in history. She is both an extremely qualified and historic choice who will help make our country’s highest court more reflective of the people who live here. I am hopeful that my colleagues in the Senate will move forward with her nomination process in a swift and fair manner.”
