Raleigh, NC – Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on the retirement of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer:

“Justice Breyer has led a distinguished career in service to our nation and to the American promise of impartial justice. Serving for nearly 30 years on the Supreme Court, he worked with intellectual honesty and fairness to adjudicate the most pressing issues of our time – from cases that challenged the fundamental right to vote and women’s reproductive freedom to the Affordable Care Act to marriage equality. Today, we can all thank Justice Breyer for his dedication to the rule of law, the Constitution, and the rights of all Americans.

“At a time when so many cases hang in the balance, it is essential that President Biden appoint an individual to serve on the Supreme Court who will meet the high standards that Justice Breyer brought to the bench. The Court must also reflect our nation; in opting to retire while President Biden serves in the White House, Justice Breyer has ensured that his final act as a Supreme Court Justice will be to create space to elevate those who have been underrepresented in our judicial system for far too long. This is a powerful legacy for Justice Breyer to leave behind.

“I look forward to the nominee that President Biden will put forward and know that my Senate Judiciary colleagues will act deliberately and swiftly to confirm our new Supreme Court Justice.”
