Washington D.C. - Today Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments in two different challenges to Texas’s six week abortion ban, S.B. 8:

“The Texas abortion ban is a shameful attempt to exercise control over women and their health care,” said Congresswoman Ross. “Every day that this law remains in effect is another day that women are unable to access vital reproductive health services. I am disappointed that the conservative majority on the Court has previously shown that it is unwilling to protect women from the whims of state legislatures bent on restricting our constitutional rights. The Supreme Court should see this law for what it is – a clear and provocative violation of the Constitution that puts women’s rights and access to reproductive care in jeopardy.”

The Supreme Court allowed the Texas abortion ban to remain in effect while it hears oral arguments. Congresswoman Ross denounced the law when it went into effect and joined her House Judiciary colleagues in urging Attorney General Merrick Garland to use the full force of the Department of Justice to combat it.
