Washington, D.C.— Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement on President Biden’s State of the Union address to the nation:

“President Biden addressed the nation at a precarious moment in our history. Russia has launched an unprovoked and premeditated attack on the innocent people of Ukraine, while COVID-19 continues to pose serious health and economic challenges for our people. Yet despite these tremendous difficulties, the state of our union remains strong. Under the President’s steady leadership, America is emerging from the pandemic stronger abroad and more prosperous at home.

“The United States is committed to supporting Ukraine in its struggle for freedom and independence. As the President outlined tonight, we will continue to impose crippling sanctions on Russia, bolster our NATO allies in Eastern Europe, and do whatever it takes to support Ukraine’s people and its sovereignty.

“Here at home, President Biden has been leading an unprecedented recovery, achieving the fastest job growth in American history and the most rapid economic growth in nearly four decades. In Congress, I fought hard to pass historic legislation – including the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – to help North Carolina recover and rebuild. But there is still so much work left to be done to make sure the recovery reaches all our people.

“Tonight, the President presented a bold plan to combat rising prices. By promoting fair competition, bringing manufacturing back to our shores, and addressing our supply chain challenges, we can lower everyday costs for the American middle class.

“I was also pleased that President Biden took time to highlight the America COMPETES Act – landmark legislation that will restore America’s global leadership in science and innovation. This bill, which will increase funding for the National Science Foundation and empower the next generation of STEM teachers, researchers, and scientists of all backgrounds, is critical to the continued growth of the Triangle’s innovation economy. I will do everything I can to get it to the President’s desk.

“Finally, more than any particular policy proposal, I appreciated the overarching vision for America that the President articulated tonight – an America where no one is left behind and everyone has a fair shot at the American Dream. From fighting inflation and investing in American innovation, to supporting families and the next generation, I am confident that if we work together and find common ground, we can address the issues that matter most to the American people. I look forward to continuing to fight alongside the President and my colleagues in Congress to forge a brighter future for all of our people.”
