Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) introduced a resolution to designate November 4 through November 10 as Forensic Nursing Week. For survivors of violence and abuse, forensic nurses provide specialized care that addresses the specific needs of the individual. Along with providing health care for survivors, forensic nurses often provide other critical support for victims of violence, including law enforcement reporting.
“Everyone deserves access to health care that meets their needs, and for survivors of violence, that means receiving expert care in the aftermath of unspeakable trauma,” said Congresswoman Ross. “From children to the elderly, forensic nurses receive specialized education and training that equips them to care for our most vulnerable when they need it most. Recognizing this week as Forensic Nursing Week is a small token to show our appreciation for the vital work they do in North Carolina and across the country. In Congress, I’ll keep fighting for the resources that survivors and our hardworking health care workforce need.”
“Violence in our society is a public health crisis of epic proportions with severe short and long-term physical and mental health consequences,” said Jennifer Pierce-Weeks, BSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, Chief Executive Officer, International Association of Forensic Nurses. “Forensic nurses specially trained in a trauma-informed, patient-centered response deliver comprehensive care that improves recovery, strengthens the legal system response, and reduces both health sequelae and healthcare system costs. With this Forensic Nursing Week resolution, Congress acknowledges the need for and vital work of forensic nurses.”
In 2022, Congresswoman Ross’ bipartisan Supporting Access to Nurse Exams (SANE) Act, legislation to address the nation-wide shortage of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) and improve care for survivors of sexual violence, was signed into law. This legislation ensures that there are qualified regional training programs for SANEs and that qualified entities receive priority for grants to increase the availability of SANEs in rural and tribal areas.
